Teaching & mentoring

From first principles
to the laboratory.

Learning physics through mathematical reasoning, experiment, and computation.

Foundations

Classical mechanics

Variational principles, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics, symmetries, conservation laws, and canonical transformations provide a foundation for understanding physical systems.

These ideas also connect naturally to beam dynamics and the design of accelerators.

Research training

Accelerator & beam physics

Work in the laboratory connects electron sources, lasers, electromagnetic fields, beam transport, and diagnostics. Modeling and measurement are developed together, with attention to the assumptions behind each interpretation.

Our historical archive follows some of the students and postdoctoral researchers who helped build these capabilities.
