Faculty profile
Pietro Musumeci
Professor of Physics
Department of Physics & Astronomy
University of California, Los Angeles

Ultrafast electron science
Research & interests
Prof. Musumeci develops ways to produce, shape, and measure high-brightness electron beams, and uses them to build new scientific instruments. His research connects accelerator physics with free-electron lasers, ultrafast electron diffraction and microscopy, and laser–electron interactions.
At UCLA, he leads experimental work at the Pegasus laboratory within PBPL. Our work ranges from photoinjectors and beam diagnostics to compact radiation sources and electron probes of materials.

Background
After earning his Ph.D. at UCLA, he led commissioning of the SPARC photoinjector in Frascati in 2005–2006. He returned to UCLA in 2007 to develop the Pegasus laboratory’s program in high-brightness beams, ultrafast electron science, and advanced acceleration.
Teaching & mentoring
Prof. Musumeci’s teaching connects the foundations of mechanics with the experimental and computational tools of accelerator physics. Training in the laboratory is an important part of this work.
